How a guide is built

Every entry answers in the same order.

A reader flipping a pocket guide open mid-task should never have to learn a new layout. Chapters hold 16 to 22 entries, and every entry in a book follows one template, such as the one below.

Use it when
The situation that sends you to this entry, in plain words.
How to do it
The steps or the numbers, short enough to read standing up.
Common error
The mistake that shows up most often at the bedside or in the field.
Document
What to chart, and what the next person needs to see.
6 × 9Trade-paperback trim
~300Pages per guide
18–24Chapters
7Diagrams, maximum
4+Image prompts for photo-accurate subjects
1Auto-paginated index

Image prompts mark the places where a real photograph or tracing is needed, such as an ECG strip, a radiograph or a wound presentation.

For publishers

Publishing pocket guides? Start from a standard.

The format that works for readers is also the one that keeps a production line moving. Use the checklist below as a pre-flight for any 6 by 9 pocket guide, and the calculator for paperback cover sizing.

  • One entry template per book. Pick the four or five fields and use them on every entry.
  • Chapters of 16 to 22 entries. Short enough to scan, long enough to be worth a tab.
  • A color for each specialty. Chapter bars, tabs and cover share it.
  • Tables inside the margins. Leave real space at the page edge, because trimmed paper takes some of it.
  • Diagrams only where they earn the page. Mark photo-accurate subjects as image prompts.
  • An index at the back. Readers search pocket guides by term, not by chapter.
  • A companion on the cover and in the listing. Say what the reader gets for free.
